Great piece Professor Shadle! I am glad to have found your work. As a vandy grad myself who forged an unorthodox path in the industry, I definitely have some thoughts here. One would be, don't expect your academic institution to give you all the career prep you need. I wouldn't trade my music degree, but I certainly wouldn't have found my way without seeking out experience in the industry outside of school. Can't wait to read more from you!
Rebecca, hi! Always love hearing from Vandy alums!! Completely agree with you here--people do sometimes expect more from institutions than they can reasonably provide, and I also highly encourage students to think outside the box AND the institution (just wait for my next post!). As you'll see in the longer essay on NMBx, though, I think institutions can make significant movement in directions that aren't just pure vocational prep. Lots of resources (financial, time, etc.) are wasted on things with little marginal return for anyone. Keep in touch!
